"MADISON AREA'S ORTHODONTIC SPECIALIST OF CHOICE"

Surgical Orthodontics

Also known as orthognathic surgery, surgical orthodontics treats and corrects abnormalities of the facial bones, specifically the jaws and the teeth, resulting in bad bites, jaw bone irregularities and improper alignment of the teeth and jaws. Often, these abnormalities cause difficulty associated with chewing, talking, sleeping and other routine activities. Orthognathic surgery corrects these problems and, in conjunction with orthodontic treatment, will improve the overall appearance of the facial profile.

Who is a Candidate?

Generally speaking, this surgery is for Adults Only!  That is because our jaw bones stop growing after adolescence making non-surgical corrections of the jaws difficult if not impossible.  Adults with severe cases of improper bites and those with facial appearance concerns can be considered for this surgery. If you are someone who would need orthognathic surgery as a part of your orthodontic treatment, your orthodontist will tell you. And, your orthodontist will work closely with your oral and maxillofacial surgeon to ensure that you receive the best possible care.

How Does Orthognathic Surgery Work?

The surgery takes place in a hospital and is performed by an oral surgeon who specializes in jaw surgery. Prior to surgery, you will understand the overall functional and aesthetic benefits of orthognathic surgery. Computerized treatment planning minimizes treatment times, recovery periods and the overall efficacy of your surgery. State-of-the-art materials such as titanium plates and miniature screws provide stability, strength and predictability to your treatment. These advances in technology, procedures and equipment reduce post-surgical recovery time, thus allowing patients to return to their normal routines soon after the surgery. After your jaw is healed, your orthodontist will resume and finish your treatment. You will need to wear braces until your teeth are straight and your bite is stable, generally this takes 6-12 months following surgery.
We understand that electing to have any surgery is a big decision.  If you are considering orthognathic surgery, we are happy to answer any questions that you may have. Your comfort is important to us. Orthognathic surgery may be unnecessary if orthodontic treatment can correct the problem. With the latest advances in orthodontics, this is sometimes the case. We will determine and advise you if orthognathic surgery is the correct treatment option for you.
