Foods to Avoid

It's true, some of our favorite foods don't "play well" with braces. Sticky, hard and sugary foods can break and bend brackets and wires and also increase the likelihood
of cavities developing. So to keep your braces in place and your teeth strong and healthy, avoid or at least keep these foods to a minimum.

Chewing on pens, pencils or other foreign objects will also cause damage to your braces so avoid those too. In the event of a loose or broken bracket or wire, call our office right away to arrange an appointment for repair.

Sticky Foods to Avoid:

  • Licorice
  • Toffee
  • Tootsie Rolls
  • Caramels
  • Starburst
  • Skittles & Candy Corn

Minimize Sugary Foods like:

  • Cake
  • Ice Cream
  • Cookies
  • Pie
  • Candy
  • Chocolate

Minimize or avoid:

  • Soda
  • Sweetened tea
  • Gatorade
  • Kool-Aid
  • Drinks with sugar

Hard Foods to Avoid:

  • Ice
  • Nuts
  • Hard taco shells
  • French bread crust/rolls
  • Corn on the cob
  • Apples (unless cut into small pieces)
  • Bagels
  • Chips
  • Jolly Ranchers
  • Pizza crust
  • Uncooked carrots (unless cut)
  • Candy Canes
